Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas has once again announced elections—this time for the Palestinian National Council—declaring 2026 “the year of Palestinian democracy,” despite his being in the 21st year of a four-year term. While Abbas says the vote will include Arabs from Gaza, Judea and Samaria, and those living abroad, skepticism remains high. Past election promises have never materialized, and recent polls show Hamas support surging in Judea and Samaria while Fatah continues to lose ground.
