Recently, IDF observation soldiers spotted a suspect along the Jordanian border. IDF troops were dispatched to the scene and apprehended the suspect, who was carrying ten handguns.
After more action in the area, Israel Police forces captured two vehicles and two additional suspects. One man was the leader of a smuggling network and the other man was his bodyguard. The weapons, along with the three suspects, were transferred to the Israel Police for further questioning.
This is all part of a huge increase in smuggling attempts since the start of the year
The IDF published a report saying that, “Since the beginning of 2022, there has been an increase in attempts to smuggle arms and drugs into Israel from Jordan and Egypt, and the IDF has been increasingly successful at foiling them.”
The IDF, together with the Israeli Police and other security agencies, have been working hard in the attempt to stop smuggling. Just this year, 40 drug smuggling operations, worth approximately 135 million shekels, have been thwarted. In addition, 18 arms smuggling operations and approximately 300 weapons were caught at the Jordanian border. Only 21 operations were foiled in 2020 and 2021 combined.
