As the sun makes its way towards the horizon and Israel prepares to enter the sabbath, Israel is nearing the seven day mark since the brutal invasion by Hamas on October 7th, 2023. The numbers are still growing, but this is clearly being defined as the worst attack the Jewish people have experienced since the Holocaust.
1,300 killed. 3,200 injured. 120 hostages confirmed in Gaza. 6,000 rockets fired by Hamas in the last six days.
The images are too horrific to view. While not wanting to scroll through social media or visit news sites, I also realize that I must take in the gravity of what has happened in Israel, and that the world must not look away.
This was no ordinary attack. This is no ordinary war. This is not about one entity battling another. This is about good versus evil. Right versus wrong. Morality against inhumanity.
How did 1,500 (or more) Hamas terrorists plan an invasion into Israel for the last two years without Israel knowing about it? How did a third-world level terrorist organization successfully break through Israel’s cutting-edge technology and advanced military, destroying IDF communications, overrunning command posts and military bases, and murdering more than 1,000 Israeli civilians? How did they overrun 22 Israeli towns and hold several of them hostage, while at the same time abducting more than 100 civilians and dragging them back to Gaza?
Only time will tell.
Many Israel supporters are happy to see such strong support coming from the current American administration. Democrats and Republicans, as well as countries who have not historically been supportive of Israel, have united in their declaration of support this week.
Unfortunately, the tide is already beginning to shift. As casualties mount in Gaza from Israel’s response to Hamas, the media is already beginning to return to their previous narratives. Israel is to blame. Israel is at fault. Israel is the occupier and oppressor. And on and on and on….
Why does support for Israel only last for a short time, even after such a horrific attack?
Why will the media give a voice to Hamas, a terrorist organization who have now proved that they are equal with ISIS in their brutality?
Why are journalists arguing about the method that Hamas used to murder 40 babies in southern Israel instead of simply condemning the brutal killing?
Why are the Palestinian Arabs living in Judea and Samaria marching through the streets, waving Hamas flags in support of the war?
What causes a pizza shop in Huwarrah to change their logo to include an 85 year old Holocaust survivor’s photo after she was taken captive by Hamas to Gaza in a complete mockery of Israel?
Even though it has been one week since the start of the war, Israel has yet to mount a ground invasion into Gaza, no doubt in part, because they are figuring out how to keep the Israeli hostages safe. What will happen in the coming days?
Only time will tell.
“O God, do not keep silence; do not hold your peace or be still, O God! For behold, your enemies make an uproar; those who hate you have raised their heads. They lay crafty plans against your people; they consult together against your treasured ones. They say, “Come, let us wipe them out as a nation; let the name of Israel be remembered no more!” (Psalm 83:1-3)
“Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep….The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore.” (Psalm 121:4,8)
We are in the midst of an emergency fundraising campaign to help protect the vulnerable communities and farms in Judea and Samaria, many of them inadequately equipped since much of the IDF has been called to the northern and southern fronts.
