Who is Yahya Sinwar? The World’s Leading Terrorist?

On Tuesday, August 6th, Hamas named Yahya Sinwar the new head of Hamas’ Political Bureau. This decision came one week after the successful assassination of Ismail Haniyeh. Who is Sinwar, and what does this mean for the futures of Hamas and Israel?

To understand the potential implications of Sinwar taking over Hamas, we should compare his background to that of his predecessor. Personally, I anticipated there would be slight differences in the upbringing of these men since each person has a unique story and life, but I was proven wrong by a quick online search.

Both men were sons of parents who had been “displaced” from Ashkelon following the Arab-Israeli war of 1948 and both were born the same year (although there is some question as to when Haniyeh was born). They were both raised in refugee camps that relied on UNRWA for schooling, food, and medicine, went to the same college the same year, studied very similar majors (Arabic literature and Arabic language), and became part of groups affiliated with violence. Both men became members of Hamas at its inception and both men were arrested the year following, 1988. Both were released soon after and went back to prison in 1989. It appears that joining Hamas and embracing violence is part of the algorithm necessary to produce a terrorist.

Their Rise to Power

1989 appears to be the year that these two men’s lives separated. While Haniyeh spent time in and out of prison and continued to climb the ranks in Hamas, Sinwar remained imprisoned for 22 years. He used his time during incarceration to study his enemies, become fluent in Hebrew, and increase his power over others by means of severe punishment. This abuse occurred if he suspected someone was guilty of conspiring with Israel and, later, this reputation for mercilessness allowed him to easily become a leader inside and outside of prison. This mercilessness against both Jews and Arabs was to be anticipated since he was convicted of the murder of Palestinian men who had been assumed to be collaborating with Israel.

Yahya Sinwar was originally supposed to serve four life sentences, but was released in 2011 with 1,000 other prisoners as part of the deal for IDF soldier Gilad Shalit who had been taken hostage by Hamas five years earlier. In 2012, Sinwar was elected as a member of the political bureau of Hamas in the Gaza Strip. During this time, Haniyeh was the acting prime minister of Gaza, but later relinquished this position in order to attain a more cohesive government with Fatah. Despite the relinquishment of power, Haniyeh remained a leader of Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Some time later in 2017, Yahya Sinwar replaced Haniyeh as the local leader of Hamas and, a few months later, Haniyeh replaced Khaled Meshaal as chief of Hamas’ political bureau, a position that Haniyeh remained in until his assassination on July 31st, 2024. While Haniyeh was known for his incredible ability to unite Hamas with other countries and terrorist groups, Sinwar is better known for his radical hatred for Israel.

Yahya’s Uncompromising Malice for Israel.

The world continually attempts to label Hamas members as “freedom fighters” and justify their actions with claims that they are “under oppression” or that a two-state solution will fix the issue entirely, but statements such as this one indicates that a Palestinian state will not suffice for Sinwar:

“Over is the time Hamas spent discussing recognizing Israel. Now Hamas will discuss when we will wipe out Israel.”

In 2022, a statement made by Sinwar was a chilling foreshadow of the plans that he would soon be the mastermind of:

“We will come to you, God willing, in a roaring flood. We will come to you with endless rockets, we will come to you in a limitless flood of soldiers, we will come to you with millions of our people, like the repeating tide.”

Sinwar was one of the masterminds of the October 7th attack against Israel and as floods of rockets and soldiers poured into Israel on that fateful morning, Sinwar’s chilling prediction was partially realized.

In the months following the declaration of war against Hamas, Sinwar has been known to use many Hamas tunnels as a means of evasion from the IDF. To this day, it is believed that he is hiding far underground in Gaza.

What Does This Mean for the Future of Hamas?

One can only wonder if the future of Hamas will only be more violent than before. Sinwar has already been labeled “the Butcher from Khan Younis”. The “Butcher”, however, will likely now be the direct target of the IDF. As Israel has shown in recent weeks, no terrorist who is in their sights is safe for long. Sinwar has the blood of many Israeli citizens on his hands and the words that Yoav Gallant, Israel’s Minister of Defense, spoke of Fuad Shukr can be easily applied to Sinwar:

“...has the blood of many Israelis on his hands. Tonight, we have shown that the blood of our people has a price, and that there is no place out of reach for our forces to this end.”

The world can rest assured that Israel will eliminate this threat just as they have eliminated the threats that have plagued the people of Israel before. Sinwar is not out of Israel’s reach and his reign of terror, God willing, will be very short lived.
