Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah in Lebanon (and member of the Lebanese parliament) has threatened Israel with war over a boundary dispute involving offshore drilling for gas in the Mediterranean Sea.
According to Arutz Sheva, Israel and Lebanon are entering one of the most strained periods they have experienced since the Second Lebanon War in 2006.
In early September, the company Energian is planning to begin drilling for gas at the Karish rig site. Nasrallah is claiming that the Israeli gas rig is in Lebanese waters and has threatened to damage the rig if pumping begins without an agreement between Israel and Lebanon on offshore boundaries between the two countries.
Israel maintains that the Karish rig is not in disputed waters based, ironically, on historical maps they received from Lebanon.
There is still hope that American mediator, Amos Hochstein, will be able to find a compromise and prevent a conflict.
