As the sun sets this evening we will enter into the biblical festival of Trumpets/Rosh HaShana. On this special day of “blasting,” we listen to the sound of the shofar. There are several biblical meanings embedded into the sound waves of a shofar blast. It can be a call to war as in the battle of Jericho, a summons to gather together, or an announcement that a king has been coronated.
These three calls of the shofar are interconnected. When a godly king is crowned, his enemies should be easily defeated and the people should naturally unify under his righteous banner. It is a beautiful, powerful picture and in line with our vision of redemption. God will be King, His enemies defeated, and His people unified!
What is the main obstacle to the realization of this heavenly peace and protection here on earth? Allow me to be blunt… it’s us!
Submitting to a king is hard! We want to do what we want to do and be the masters of our own destiny. Fighting against those who oppose God’s kingship is also not an easy task. Unity of believers may be our most undervalued and least sought-after trait.
There is hope! There is hope through the blast of the shofar. A shaking into alignment with God, His ways, and His dreams for the world is the intended effect of the shofar blast. It is meant to shake you to the core, causing you to question who you are following, what you are fighting, and who you are unifying with.
As we hear the shofar blasts this year, may we all turn, at whatever level we can, on whatever leg of the journey we’re on, at whatever pace our Good Shepherd will lead us, towards our King and Redeemer. It is time to repent. It’s time to turn from whatever ideas, actions, fears, addictions, or insecurities that have us chained and face toward the One who sets captives free.
May God bless you with the knowledge of His will so that you can turn to Him this Rosh HaShana, and may the coming year be a year of seating God on the throne of your heart, defeating enemies, and unification with those who bear His holy Name!
Shana Tova,
Zac
